Grade 1 - Week 3 - Mindful Art

Grade 1- Mindful Art
Ms. Pattinger

Now more than ever it’s important to express our emotions. What better way than through art.:)
Art can provide a healthy outlet for feelings that people need to get out. It is also another way of communicating when someone cannot always put into words. The following exercises can help your child to be more in touch with and aware of their feelings. Even reflecting on their art can give them new understanding about their feelings.
6 Image Art Sequence

1.    Scribble Warm-up
2.    Happiness
3.    Anger
4.    Anxiety/Fear
5.    Sadness
6.    How do you feel today
You will need 6 pieces of paper.  For the scribble warm-up, encourage them to cover the pages with scribbles and lines. Experimenting with how the materials feel and how many different types of lines they can make. For each of the emotions, I encourage them to do an abstract picture and avoid words and faces. See examples below. Ask them to think about what colors they connect with each feeling and then what lines and shapes could express that feeling. For the “how they feel today” image let them know that this may be one of the feelings that they already drew, it may be a combination of feelings, or it may include feelings that were not already explored. At the end of the exercise look at all the pictures together exploring how they are similar or different and discuss how they are feeling today.  Maybe ask which feelings are easiest or hardest to do and how they felt while working on it. You can do this with more than one medium. For example markers, crayons, chalk and paint. Really whatever you have in the house you could use.
