Grade 1 - Week 4 - Heart Art

First Grade  Art-   Mindful Heart Art

Ms. Pattinger
Time to fill your heart with art!  This week we are going to continue with another mindful art project because it’s important that we connect within and with each other.
You will need:
  • Paper- 8 ½ x 11 or larger. Any color you choose
  • Pictures and/or stickers
  • Markers and/or crayons
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape
Draw or cut a heart on your piece of paper. You may color this heart if you choose. If you are using colored paper you can chose to add more color if you like. Think about your color choices. Maybe you want to use all warm colors? Cool colors? Warm colors are red, yellow and orange. Pink is also a warm color because it comes from red. Cool colors are blue, green and violet. Now it’s time to create the collage. The word collage comes from the French verb coller, meaning to glue. It is the artistic process of gluing and assembling various materials to a flat surface.
Fill in the heart with pictures and even words that make you feel good. Magazines, newspapers or pictures you have at home work  too!  You can even print them from the internet. You also can cut out words from a magazine or internet or write your own. How you arrange your collage is up to you. You may overlap your images meaning some may be placed slightly on top or behind each other. Now write a sentence or two about your heart. What are you trying to convey with your heart? What is your heart saying?

Parents, before your child begins I invite you to do this heart meditation with your child.
Heart Meditation:
Sitting comfortably, quietly take a few deep breaths. Notice how naturally you breath. You don’t have to think about it. It happens on its own. Now place your hand on your heart and close your eyes. Take 5 deep breaths and focus on how your heart is feeling right now. Sad, happy, scared, silly? Now think of your heart being filled with gratefulness (or something we are thankful for). Pause, and now,  think of it being filled with joy, then, love, empathy. Notice how your body feels. Notice how your heart now feels. Does it feel the same or different from when we started? As we repeat these positive phrases, you send both yourself and others messages of wellness and that can help how you interacted with others. Prepare to listen to your heart and be with it in the moment, and breathe as you finish.
