Grade 2 - Week 4 - Miro

Surrealist Creatures
with Ms. Kampson

Art Supplies:
White drawing paper (computer paper is fine)
Pencil & Eraser
Sharpie or Black Marker
Coloring supplies (crayons, markers, or color pencils)
1 Dice from a board game

Vocabulary:
Surrealism is an artistic movement that focuses on dreams and imagination. It does not focus on reality or what is real. Surrealists wanted to show their thoughts and fantasies in their artwork, often creating unexpected and unrealistic images.

Elements of Art:
Shape: a flat, enclosed area of an artwork created through lines and colors. Remember from last week’s lesson, shapes can be organic or geometric.

Line: The variety of lines used in art is endless. Some examples can include thick, thin, curved, angular, broken, wavy, zigzag, and bold. A variety in line thickness creates interest.

Create your masterpiece by following the steps in my video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZKUBzj4IfE&feature=youtu.be

I have written the steps from the video below for you to refer back to:

Step 1: Roll the dice to see what body shape to draw. Leave enough room on the top and bottom to add the head and other details.

Step 2: Roll the dice to see what head shape to draw.

Step 3: Roll the dice to see what eyes to draw. You may draw 1,2, or 3 eyes. The eyes can be all the same or you can re-roll for each eye. You don’t necessarily have to draw the eyes on the face.

Step 4: Roll the dice to see what extra shapes to add. You can use these shapes to add to your creature or its environment.

Step 5: Roll the dice to see what extra lines to add. You can use these shapes to add to your creature or its environment.

Step 6: Now make the drawing your own. Be inspired by the shapes and lines that you saw in Joan Miro’s artwork. Remember you are creating surrealist art; it doesn’t have to make sense.

Step 7: Outline your drawing in Sharpie or black pen. Erase your pencil lines when you are done. If you don’t have a Sharpie or black pen skip this step.

Step 8: Color your drawing. Color slowly and carefully to show your good craftmanship.

Store your artwork in an Art Folder for safe keeping until we meet again. If you’d like us to see your work, email a photo to your art teacher. You can also have an adult help you tag us on Instagram.

Project Extension: Look at the creature you drew. What do you think their name is? Where do they live, what do they do, what do they eat, who do they hang out with? Write a short story about your creature. Share it with someone when you’re done.
